Dr Marius J Swart has practised as a cardiothoracic surgeon since 2001 in Mediclinic, Bloemfontein. After his specialist training at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, he returned to his alma mater in 1993. He worked as a senior consultant at the Universitas Academical Hospital before he embarked on a career in the private sector.

He has not lost touch with his academic roots, and a PhD was conferred to him in 2014 by the University of the Free State. The study’s subject was the spiritual experience related to major cardiac surgery. He also has other peer-reviewed publications to his credit, based on the day-to-day work in his own practice.

Dr Swart’s scope of his practice lies in adult cardiac surgery and pleuro-pulmonary diseases. He works in close relationships with a dedicated team of cardiologists and intensivists. He is a member of the South African Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (USA based).

He has a life outside the hospital and enjoys nature, gardening, is a patron of the FSSO and plays an active role in his local congregation. He is a regular blood donor and has completed several open water swims. He is married to his school sweetheart and has three married children, some of them also in the medical field.
